Among the remarkable instances of modernist architecture in Varna from the 1930s can be found along Primorski Blvd. The structure was conceived by architect Stefan Venedikt Popov, who additionally took on the role of developer for the project. The architect envisioned a resort home comprising apartments intended for rental to vacationers in Varna. On the first floor, there were establishments such as a pastry shop, a hair salon, various shops, and a bar, all thoughtfully arranged. In light of economic challenges, architect Popov undertook a revision of the original project, ultimately designing apartments intended for sale.
The structure was initially designated as “Varna Beach”; however, in the collective memory of the inhabitants of Varna, it continues to be referred to as the “Cooperative of Arch. Venedikt Popov”. During its era, this structure stood as one of the tallest edifices in Varna, featuring an elevator provided by the Schindler company. The elevator remains intact and is still in operation.
Among the recollections of Varna’s inhabitants who experienced the building’s inauguration in 1933, there exists an account of a line of individuals eager to ascend in the elevator. In order to accommodate this eager crowd and raise a profit, an apparatus was installed wherein the insertion of a coin was a prerequisite for the activation of the elevator.
Stefan Popov was born in the city of Ruse on January 23, 1889. Among his parents was Venedikt Popov, a well-known person from Varna and a lawyer. After finishing high school at the Varna Men’s High School, he went to Munich, Germany, in 1911 to study architecture.
