The buidling for the Higher Naval School was constructed in 1954. Until then the school was housed in different parts of Varna since it's establishment in 1900.

The Higher Naval School building was completed in 1954. Since its inception in 1900, the school has been hosted in several sections of Varna. Some of these locations included Yanaki Flori’s house, the Commercial School (now University of Economics), the Marine Biological Center and Aquarium, the 8th Coastal Infantry Regiment of Varna’s barracks, and the French Girls’ Boarding House (now College of Tourism and School of Arts).
It was renamed Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in 1949, and its mission is to teach officers for the navy, merchant marine, and maritime professionals.
