The Gratitude Monument in Varna thanks the Bulgarian people for the assistance in keeping the Jewish Community safe during World War II
Ref Number: 217
In 2013, the Jewish community in the city of Varna, which is located on the Black Sea, took the initiative to erect a memorial in honour of their Bulgarian saviors.
To commemorate the major events that took place in 1943 on the occasion of their seventieth anniversary, the statue is tucked away in the picturesque garden that is located in front of the Archaeological Museum. Around 48,000 Jews were rescued from the concentration camps during this time period, with the assistance of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Bulgarian people. Among those liberated were 1,300 Jews from the Varna region.
There is a strong connection between the design and a traditional wind instrument, which holds a significant place in the cultural symbolism of the people who live there.
