The Varna Drama Theatre “Stoyan Bachvarov” serves as a hub of cultural activity in the city. The splendid edifice was constructed in the early 20th century. The concept for its building originated with Ivan Tserov, the mayor of Varna from 1909 to 1912. His ambition was to construct a contemporary European theatre in Varna.
The municipal council adopted the mayor’s proposal, which received support from the Varna community. The idea of renowned Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov was chosen following an architectural competition. On March 26, 1912, a formal ceremony was conducted by the Mayor Ivan Tseroto establish the foundation stone of the theater edifice.
A substantial throng of individuals occupied the central city square, Nezavisimost. The mayor had the honor of laying the foundation stone. Ivan Tserov executed this with considerable enthusiasm and offered a speech. No one anticipated that the building would be postponed, resulting into the eventual theater’s opening in 1932.
Ivan Tserov was fortunate to see the theatre’s inauguration and openly expressed his enthusiasm and joy for the occasion.
