A glimpse of France nestled within the majestic walls of the Palace Euxinograd in Varna
Ref Number: 209
Located 4 km northeast of Varna, one can find the Euxinograd Palace. Once a regal summer retreat for the monarchs of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom, it now serves as a state residence. Before the palace lies the French Garden, a refined section of the park that complements the grandeur of the palace. In the early years of the 20th century, a stunning lake adorned with lilies emerged, accompanied by the addition of sculptures. Crafted in France, these pieces are precise replicas of the statues found within the gardens of Versailles. This is not mere chance. The Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand I (1861-1948) was the grandson of Louis Philippe, the final king of France, and he also traced his lineage back as the great-great-great-grandson of Louis XIV, known as the Sun King.
With a deep appreciation for his French heritage, Tsar Ferdinand incorporated various French symbols into the design of his summer palace. As the 19th century drew to a close, France stood as a republic, while in Bulgaria, the legacy of the French monarchy continued to resonate within the Bulgarian royal family.
