Following the loss of his parents, he and his family members made their way to Bucharest, where his grandmother Sultana provided him with a Greek education. He took on the role of a tutor for the esteemed Ghika family. He pursued further studies in Athens and Paris, where he took part in the French Revolution in 1848.
