A picturesque townhouse from the late 19th century is situated at 9 Antim I Blvd. It was conceived by civil engineer Pavel Karakulakov as his personal residence.
Pavel Karakulakov was born on June 20, 1861, in Bolgrad, Bessarabia. He completed his education at the Bolgrad Gymnasium and the Teachers’ Institute in Odessa, inside the Russian Empire. In the academic year 1878-1879, he was designated as a music instructor in Razgrad. There, he established a student church choir that delivered the inaugural choral performance in the city on December 25, 1878. Pavel Karakulakov was a prominent member of the community center.
He pursued further schooling and obtained a degree in civil engineering in Munich, German Empire. In 1896, Karakulakov served as the head of the technical department of the Varna City Council and as the chairman of a local construction firm. He conceptualised and constructed the obsolete Old Post Office edifice on Nezavisimost Square in Varna. He devised a regulatory plan for the city.
In 1894, engineer Karakulakov created the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers and Officers of the Eighth Primorski Infantry Regiment in the Serbo-Bulgarian War.
He was employed in the municipal administration of Plovdiv. In 1909, Karakulakov served as the chief of a department within the Ministry of Public Buildings.
Pavel Karakulakov passed away in Sofia in 1915.
