Varna was besieged from July to September 29, 1828, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829.
While the Turkish army was occupying Varna, approaching Russian forces attempted to besiege the city on June 28, 1828, but were overpowered by the overwhelming Ottoman army and the siege was postponed.
By the end of July, the Black Sea Fleet under the leadership of Aleksey Greig had supplied more soldiers. Emperor Nicholas I and the Guards Corps arrived in the city in August.
In comparison to the 20, 000 Ottoman forces defending the city, Adjutant General Menshikov commanded the siege with 23, 000 soldiers and 170 artillery pieces under his command.
Omer Vryonis Pasha’s force of 20,000 failed to desiege the city, and the Russians captured it with approximately 7000 captives and 140 artillery pieces.
Because of heavy casualties during their summer battle, the Russian army was forced to retire from Varna and the Danube until the next spring.
