1833 – 1837 Military stronghold on the place of today’s Aquarium

In that period Varna acquired the image of a strong fortress. Under the orders of Sultan Mahmud II, there were built in Varna new fortress walls, gates, military storages, military quarters, hospital. There was build North-East of the sea port a massive military stronghold, called ‘Eni kuli tabiya’.  Its exact place was where today is the Aquarium. On the 18th of April 1837, there was a royal visit in Varna led by Mahmud II and the German officer Helmut Moltke with emphasis on the new fortress built in the city.
